Why this competition exists
In short. UEFA created the Nations League to replace friendlies with nothing at stake. This is the fifth edition: 54 nations, four leagues, promotion and relegation, and a Final Four in June. Portugal have won it twice, France and Spain once each.
The competition is called UEFA Nations League in English and Dutch, Ligue des nations de l'UEFA in French: three names for the same trophy, and Belgians use them interchangeably.
Before 2018, international windows outside qualifying were filled with friendlies that neither clubs, players nor supporters took seriously. UEFA answered with a proper competition: nations of similar level facing each other in official matches, with a table, promotion and relegation. For smaller nations, it also opened an extra route to the European finals.
The 2026-27 format
The format is unchanged from the previous edition. Leagues A, B and C each have sixteen teams in four groups of four, League D has six. Everyone plays their group rivals twice, home and away. Russia remains excluded.
In League A, the top two in each group play two-legged quarter-finals from 25 to 30 March 2027. The four winners meet at the Final Four, from 9 to 13 June 2027: two semi-finals, a third-place match and the final.
The bottom of the table has changed. On 15 September 2026, in Thessaloniki, UEFA’s executive committee revised promotion and relegation ahead of the 2028 reform. Across the four League A groups, the two best third-placed teams stay up, the two weakest thirds and the two best fourths play a play-off against League B runners-up, and only the two weakest fourth-placed teams go down directly. The four League B group winners are still promoted without a play-off.
In 2028-29 the competition changes shape: three divisions of eighteen nations, in three groups of six. The quarter-finals and the Final Four stay as they are.

Belgium in the Nations League
In the first edition, Belgium had the Final Four in their hands. A 5-2 defeat in Switzerland took it away.
Two years later the golden generation dominated a group with England, Denmark and Iceland: five wins, a single defeat at Wembley, sixteen goals and the best attack in League A. In October 2021, in Italy, France turned the semi-final around in Turin. Belgium finished fourth, still their best result.
The 2024-25 edition nearly ended badly. Third in their group behind France and Italy, ahead of Israel, Belgium had to play a relegation play-off against Ukraine, and the campaign cost Domenico Tedesco his job. Beaten 3-1 in Murcia in Rudi Garcia’s first match, they turned it around in Genk (3-0, De Cuyper then Lukaku twice) to stay in League A.
This time it is Mark van Bommel’s turn. The Dutchman, league and cup winner with Antwerp in 2023, took over on 15 August on a contract running to Euro 2028. He succeeds Rudi Garcia, who reached the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals. The draw of 12 February, at Brussels Expo, put France and Italy back on Belgium’s path, and added Turkey.
